Out with the Old. .In with ORCHID!!~*

I had the pleasure of contributing a tid bit of advice and insight about Pantone's color for 2014 "Radiant Orchid". Check out this article, a few pictures of the Obama's in their orchid selections, and what I had to say. Special thanks as always to Karen Nazor-Hill!!

Emerald Green is so last year.

The new must-have color for 2014 is ... drum roll, please ... radiant orchid. And though it may look like plain old purple, radiant orchid is a "captivating, magical, enigmatic purple," according to Pantone, the company that claims global authority on color trends and recently revealed radiant orchid as the color of the year.

Still, to the naked eye, it's a shade of purple.

"While the 2013 color of the year, emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, radiant orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a news release. "An invitation to innovation, radiant orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today's society.

"An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, radiant orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm," she says.

Pantone says radiant orchid's multifaceted hue is "seductive" when combined with red and it pairs well with its "sister shades" of lavender, purple and pink. It also can be paired with olive and hunter greens, turquoise and teal, light yellows, gray, beige and taupe, the company says.

Suzanne West, owner of Frankie & Julian's fashion boutique on Frazier Avenue, says the color is already showing up in fashions.

"Radiant orchid is actually a welcome change from past years' tangerine and emerald (previous Pantone Color of the Year shades)," she says. "It is a more mellow color, yet still vibrant and lots of industries will jump on this, such as fashion, home decor, etc. The color is a mix of purple, fuchsia, and pink and will be good on most skin tones as well."

The shade flatters most hair colors, too, she says.

"Traditional purple, for example, is not great on redheads, but orchid is actually nice on redheads -- a little more 'mauve-ish' is a great color for redheads, but it's a great shade for all other hair colors," West says.

It's also good for men, she says.

"Purple is trending right now with certain menswear, but I am not a fan of purple shirts and jackets, but ties and other little pops of purple I like," West says. "Also, I think smaller pops of purple are more how your average man would interpret that trend."

Dr. Tony Leach of Chattanooga says he likes the color purple. Leach, a doctor of optometry and owner of Epic Optical in downtown Chattanooga, is often seen sporting shades of purple in his wardrobe, particularly sweaters and ties.

"I do like and wear purple quite a bit," he says. "It's a very versatile color. It looks good with black, grey and tan slacks or suits. I also like pink but I have noticed that purple is the most dominant accent color this year and it doesn't surprise me that it is the Color of the Year for 2014."

Leach says he also expects the color to show up in eyewear.

"We can custom order almost any color frame but we do have several styles in orchid and purple," he says.

Leach's wife, Denise Leach, a Chattanooga-based Realtor, says she thinks purple works for her husband, but for her? Not so much.

"With his brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair, it is a good color for him," she says. "For me, though, I may use purple to accessorize, but it's not my favorite color."

Local fashion model and former Miss Black Tennessee Lorean Mays says she's a fan of purple.

"There are different hues that work well for everyone, however, you have to do a little research and trying out different shades to find which is right for you," she says. "Finding the perfect shade has to do with you knowing your undertones. I have green undertones in my skin so I go for a more jewel tone (royal purple) or lilac. I think we will see more of it due to the color trend this upcoming year."

The Pantone pick will also show up in weddings in 2014, says Sonali Lamba, co-founder of, an online retailer of bridesmaid dresses and accessories.

"Radiant orchid has become a popular choice for bridesmaids as it flatters a variety of skin tones, but it also serves as a nice complement to various color palettes, including shades of mint and coral," Lamba says. "Since it is officially the 'color of the year,' we can expect to see it in dresses for bridesmaids or pocket squares for groomsmen, but also as an accent in paper products, flowers, specialty cocktails and table linens."

The new shade of purple will also show up soon in cosmetics, as well as interiors including paint, accent piece and decorative accessories, Pantone reports.

Get your Orchids in order. .2014 is almost here!!

Sistah's Chat. .The Purpose

Over the past 2 months I have had a few people approach me or email to ask. .
"What is the purpose of Sistah's Chat?"

I've always enjoyed serving on different panels discussing current issues regarding women, the state of the Black community, relationships, etc. Often times the opportunities that I've had were outside of the city. I felt that with the movements such as Black Girls ROCK, My Black Is Beautiful "Imagine A Future", Saving Our Daughters, etc. that the discussion on how to empower girls/women, showcase our outstanding achievements, how our images are being depicted in the media, internal racism, bullying, and many other issues not only need to be discussed on a national level but truly on a local level.

Each and every day in our respective communities we face the same issues that girls/women across the country face. We also have girls/women locally and statewide who are doing outstanding things to bring awareness to these said issues. Sometimes we don't have anyone to openly discuss what we are going through in an open and non-judgmental environment. Sometimes we feel that no one truly cares or will support our efforts that we are putting forth in the community to promote and evoke change.  Sometimes we would never have a chance to meet or interact with our community/state "She-roes". A platform for change. A platform to have open and honest dialogue with each other.

If we don't begin to create opportunities for our voices and stories to be told and heard. .who will? A quote that stuck out to me from this years "Black Girls ROCK" was by Marian Wright Edleman she stated "Black women rock the cradle and whoever rocks the cradle. .rocks the future". We have to think about all the women who have come before us. Who were degraded, denied, and some even died for us to have the rights that we do today and for their stories to continue to live through us. We have to get back to being as "ONE". Loving, Uplifting, and Supporting each other in our respective goals. We have to understand how our individual successes are important to each other and the generations to come. This transcends beyond the color line to ALL women. A unified sisterhood is a MUST.

That is the purpose of "Sistah's Chat"!!

The next installment will be in 2 parts in February 2014!!
Part One: "How to Love 101: Love and Relationships"
Part Two: "Preserving our Legacy"

If you are interested in lending your voice to the panel, being a sponsor, or vendor please email me at and "February Chat's" as your subject title.

Reflecting. .~*

I hope everyone had a very "Happy Thanksgiving"!! I wasn't able to Blog (and honestly didn't feel like doing much of anything) due to the passing of my great grandmother. She was 102. She lived her life giving back to others. Always active working in her church, serving on the district Usher's board, the Order of the Eastern Star, PHA (and all the other female auxiliaries of the Prince Hall Masonic Structure), and of course a devoted family woman.

It put a lot of things in perspective for me. We often times wonder where we get a lot of our personality, ambition, and unwavering will to conquer over obstacles from. .and I honestly thought back to the women of my family. All though on different sides of my bloodline they were all very similar. All of them were hard working, giving, and God fearing women. I've always had the desire to help others any way I can and that comes from them. Putting my family first and doing anything and everything I can to make sure they are happy. .comes from them. Stepping out on faith and trusting in God. .comes from them. Always being a lady and my style. .comes from them.

Realizing that all the opportunities I have today are by the grace of God and their perseverance through all obstacles. .I lift up a prayer to heaven and simply say "Thank You".

Rest In Peace. .

11 Qualities Men Love Most

Hmm. .now I'm sure after seeing the title everyone is thinking  thinking "What is this about?".
Well according to Kevin Carr there are specifically 11* things men just absolutely LOVE and can't do without.

A little about Kevin Carr. .

Dating Coach and motivational speaker Kevin Carr is the author of "If All Men Are Dogs: Then Women You Hold the Leash", and the new eBook "Date Responsibly: Choosing Better Men".

Here we go. .

#1 Honesty
Real men respect an honest woman. In fact, they yearn for one. A woman that possesses the ability to be open and honest about what she wants is one that can clearly articulate how she does and doesn't feel. There's nothing like it. In a world full of surface interaction your candidness can be refreshing for him.

#2 Empathy

There are a lot of cases where he doesn't necessarily want to be "right.” He simply wants to be understood. He will never be able to understand in totality what it's like to be a woman in this world just as you will never be able to fathom what it takes for him to be a man. That's perfectly fine. However, if you can find it within you to be aware enough to recognize he has a different perspective and to try to see life from his view, he will be forever grateful. This will only prompt him to do the same for you.

#3 Acceptance
One of the worse things you can do is judge a man, especially when it comes to his past life before you. He isn't asking for forgiveness; he's merely seeking your acceptance. If he can become comfortable in divulging who he's been then you'll never have to guess who he is.

#4 Trustworthy
If he has proven himself to be trustworthy then trust him. He needs to know that you believe in his character. It strengthens him. He isn't asking you to love blindly but just not be consumed with hypotheticals.

#5 Goal Driven
Every secure goal-driven man is looking for the same in a woman. To know that you have plans outside of him is a true turn on. This actually helps to keep him in check and lets him know there are things in your life that are bigger than him.

#6 Homemaker
I am not suggesting that you walk around with an apron on all day baking biscuits. He isn't looking for that. But, what he is looking for is someone that can turn a house into a home. He's seeking someone who is able to give his life some much-needed balance. Yes he needs security as well, especially when it comes to sharing his day-to-day life with you.

#7 Supportive
Every man needs a support system. He wants you to genuinely believe in him. There are more than enough critics in the world. Be his fan and support his worthwhile dreams. If the woman who has his heart believes in him, it will only cause him to become a better man.

#8 Down-to-Earth
There's nothing like a woman that's down for whatever and comfortable in her stilettos and his Jordan's as well. He relishes this quality as it allows him to put his guard down and helps to do away with his preoccupation to always impress you with flashy dates and things.

#9 A Firm Foundation
He loves that you have standards and he loves it even more that you stick to them. Standards give him something to live up to. Real men don't mind them, and in fact, your standards cause them to rise up to the level to which they have been set.

#10 Authenticity
He appreciates when you are exactly who you say you are at all times. As much as he wants you to be empathetic and understanding, he doesn't want you to pull punches. He would love to read your mind, but he can't. So, speak it. He will appreciate and respect you for it.

#11 Drive
Everybody loves a hustler. Someone who works hard at whatever it is they are doing. That is a sexy trait on a woman if there ever was one. Such a quality not only turns him on but will also encourage him to work even harder at his respective dreams and endeavors.

I don't know about you all but all 11 apply to both what men/women want and NEED. .
Give me your take. .Let's chat about this. .Leave a comment~*

If you haven't figured out by now. .I am a music LOVER!! You will see my FAVorite songs of all genres posted here and I love to highlight my FAV artist.

Allllllllllll the Buzz from the BET Hip Hop Awards has the internet going CRAZY!! From the return of Juvenile and Mannie Fresh on stage with 2 Chainz and of course the legendary Bone Thugs N Harmony (Come ON!! It's the firrst of the mooooonth!!).

HOWever. .the Cypher that Shut It DOWN was delivered from none of than TDE. I love me some Kendrick Lamar. .but this shout out is for a young cat who clearly ripped his bars like no other Isaiah Rashad!!

The 21 year old from Chattanooga, TN has already been proclaimed as one the Hottest "Up and Coming" MC's in the game. With sharp and straight to the point bars he truly has something that the game has been missing.

Here are a few exerts from Eric Diep's XXL interview. .

On growing up in Chattanooga, TN:
Growing up in Chattanooga, Tennessee is probably as normal as it is growing up in Oregon. It’s the same as anywhere else, coming out [to Los Angeles] really help me see that. The people that I am surrounded by remind me the most of the people I was around from where I am from—like my family. In comparison, it feels a lot the same. It wasn’t like a crazy adjustment coming here. It was like moving into another house with my family.

On signing to TDE:
I don’t really have a straight answer for why [me being signed] was under wraps for so long. It just made sense. Just because I got signed doesn’t mean we have to put it out today. It wasn’t really anybody’s business to do it. We are trying to make the best product possible. The more people know, the more pressure it is. Even if it ain’t real pressure, it’s the more pressure to put on the staff and everybody and cater to the people. This is what we do. We’re artists. We do it for the people and we do it for people who enjoy music. You don’t want to let them down, but you don’t want them looking for some stuff for the longest and checking for some stuff. Basically, you want them to enjoy it. You want them to enjoy the experience of waiting for the project.

On what he wants to accomplish as an artist:
I didn’t come into it with super high expectations of like, “When I drop my first song, I am going to have a couple thousand people looking at my stuff.” [“I Shot Ya Down”] isn’t the first song I dropped. The first song I put out, it did what I thought it was going to do. I did real local stuff. It got two-three hundred views in the first couple of days. To me, that’s the same as 300,000 when don’t know nobody know who you are. I just worked on that. I worked on perfecting how I wanted to communicate with people and the right ways to put out music and everything. Seeing how I am accepting now is more like, “Alright cool. Finally learning the right way to do some of this stuff.” Learn how to build anticipation and all this type of stuff. All it is is a big learning experience.

Read the full interview here:

All I can say is that I am always extremely proud of those who grind in their city to see their dreams become a reality!! I know that their will be great things and of course great music to come from Isaiah Rashad!! Go Head!!

SophistiKat "Drink of the Month"

I have been slipping with posting my "Drink of the Month" favorites. We are already close to the end of October but there are still a few Homecomings, HBCU Classics, and of course just other good time/chill events left. I wanted to keep it simple but true to the kick off of Fall and cool weather. Here is a very subtle, smoothy, and tasty Martini that can be plugged in and enjoyed at any event.

The Amber Martini

3 1/2 oz Ciroc Vanilla Vodka
1/2 oz Frangelico
1/2 oz Amaretto
1 or 2 cut and sliced Red Apples

Pour contents into Mixer/Shaker
Shake all ingredients over ice until they are well chilled
Strain into a chilled Martini glass
Garnish each glass with a slice of apple

Voila. .you are ready to sip and chill ;")

Oh Mack. .~*

A good friend of mine called me last night. .
"Yo L!! You've got to hear lil dude from the Wire's album". .
Of course I was like "Who? What?" (mind you I am sick too. .Glory. .LoL!!)
"It's FIRE!! GO to iTunes and cop it stat!!"
The way I was feeling at that moment. .was "Child BYE!!"LoL!!

However I am a sucker for GREAT music. He text the name and album title. .Low and behold. .

It was the debut LP from the oh so Handsome Tristan Wilds aka Mack Wilds!! I have been a fan of the young actor since his days on "The Wire". .90210. .and of course "Red Tails" (Yes Lawd!! That was an outstanding and HANDSOME cast) so I honestly didn't know what to expect from him pursuing music. I remembered seeing the "Own IT" video this summer. .but didn't think to much about it.

Over the past few months there has been a buzz about Tristan taking a break from acting to pursue a career in music.  We hear this A LOT from actors, athletes , etc and sometimes they just don't deliver.  (Sad but true) With Mack Wilds. .that is not the case!!

I purchased the album and immediately began to listen. .and I was SHOCKED!! Now I am the type of person that I don't start with the first track on the album, I listen to the first title that jumps out at me. .and that was "Art of Fallin'". People giving their opinion on what "fallin"/"love" is put against an almost old school track (reminisce of a Slick Rick beat).  I then listened to "Keepin It Real", "A NY Love Story" (I love to rock my french manicure!! Signature mani for a SophistiKat), "Wild Things" feat Method Man, "U Can Cry to Me" feat Raekwon and Dougie Fresh (It doesn't get any more NY than that). . then. .Child. .Glory. .I listened to "Don't Turn Me Down" and BayBAE it was a wrap!! I melted straight out of my bed!!  (I also found the video to this track. .and I must say. .Mack is a MAN!!)

This brother has delivered!! So many people are truly blessed to multi talented and Mack is one of those people. I was a fan before but I am sold on the music now too!! Please don't sleep on this album and purchase it today. I promise you won't regret it!!

Purchase via iTunes:

Check out his brief documentary "New York: A Love Story" and get a glimpse at who Tristan "Mack" Wilds is. .(I seriously was wondering where "Mack" came from. .)

Dose of Soul

Earlier this week I read an article on HuffPost "Black Voices" that Jodeci had NEVER broke up!!

K-Ci stated "We are not getting back together, simple reason is we never broke up!! (YES Lawd!!) We have a vault of CDs that we could just put out at any moment. But just like when Jodeci first came out, nobody expected that. And we’re just going to keep it that way. But for now, with the love from Dalvin and DeVante, they’re pushing me and Jojo. They’re like “do what you gotta do,” DeVante said; “I’m going to let y'all know when I’m ready. But y'all continue doing what y'all doing.” And actually, we’re in the studio right now. We record new Jodeci material every chance we get… So we’re just waiting on DeVante’s call."

For a Jodeci fan such as myself that is AWESOME news!! And WOO!! Glory. .DeVante and that voice. I had been trying to figure out who Trey Songz voice (not singing but his normal voice) reminds me of and it's DeVante!! When that man comes on to ANY Jodeci track. .GLORY!! Trigga has the same effect.

Anywhoo. .check out the video for one of my FAV Jodeci tracks for your Sunday Dose of Soul "STAY". .

Seeing RED

Deitrick Haddon one of my FAVorite gospel artist has released his new album "RED"!!
AND it debuted at #1 on Billboards Gospel Chart!! Go HEAD!!

RED= Restoring Everything Damaged  is filled with powerful and uptempo ballads that anyone in their walk with Christ can relate to. I have been a fan for a few years now and this man NEVER disappoints. I enjoy music and artist such as he because this provides a dynamic that I don't experience in my Sunday worship. I am Church of Christ (no instruments, no choir) however I am a lover of all types of music and my family has ALWAYS listened to the Gospel genre despite our denominational affiliation.

I have listened to every track on this album since purchasing (Yes I have the DELUXE edition!! Boaw) and it is a testament to how far Deitrick has come creatively and as an artist.

MY FAVorite tracks are:
Feel A Breakthrough
Handle This
Just As I AM* (This has been on repeat!!)
Church Rock

One thing I admire is that this man has faced a lot of challenges publicly and not once did he run to hide from the media or press. He faced everything head on from day one and told the TRUTH!! He has not let anything stop him and pressed forward with his head held high. That is truly commendable!! That is a true testament that in any form the devil can show up and try to steer you from your walk with God but no matter what you can never doubt nor stray for God. We must all continue to hold tight to HIS hand and believe HIS word.

"No man can stand in the way of what GOD has for you".

I am excited to see Deitrick and a few other well known men of God on Oxygen's "Preachers of LA" premiering Oct. 9!! So be sure to check your local listing for channel and time information. #Support these men

If you don't have the album RED you need to GET IT NOW!!

Also be sure to Follow him on Twitter @deitrickhaddon

Enjoy. .

The Butler. .MY Take

Lee Daniels: The Butler. .

I have been waiting a few weeks to write this post. .I  have had to marinate (yes I said marinate) on a lot of my thoughts. During this time I have checked out a few other Blog post and of course heard the critics reviews of this movie. Via Facebook I have read a lot of post from Black "conscious" pages as well. .with that being said here goes. .

I enjoyed the movie!! From the heart wrenching beginning to the very prideful end. I went to see the movie with my mother who experience the Civil Rights movements as a teen first hand. A lot of accounts that where faced in the movie by some of the young people, my mother did not face. That didn't mean that she was not aware of many of the treatment of torment of blacks during the movement. .a brave group of Howard High School students helped to desegregate the downtown lunch counters right here in our city. Our city was actually the first to use the water hose tactic on young black protesters before Birmingham.

The movie overall ended up being better than I thought. I knew the movie was going to be good but it was absolutely GREAT. I had been following the movie since production started and read every piece of information I could find about Mr. Gaines.

It left me with a sense of pride because we were able to watch 2 generation deal and cope with being Black in America. You had Cecil Gaines who had grown up under oppression and Louis who grew up in an era fighting for equality and change. Both very different but strong in the sense of how they dealt and overcame each challenge that presented itself.

I have heard MANY people state that they are tired of seeing such films as "The Help" and "The Butler" come to the big screen and that we as a people need to boycott movie that depict blacks as "domestics", "hustlers", "slaves", etc. In reference to movies like "The Help" and "The Butler" that was our reality and for some it still is today. The maids and butler put most of our parents and family members through college with those said jobs. Helped our parents to understand and know the true meaning of hard work. Raised them to be the most confident and educated people we see today. My family for instance had a few women who were "domestics" and that is something that has always been discussed openly. No one is ashamed of that. The circumstances that we faced from day one in this country were not brought on by us. We must not be ashamed of our past but in a way acknowledge how far we have come and instill in the younger generation a sense of pride. Being prideful of being BLACK. Remembering and praying for all the souls who lost their lives for us to be EQUAL. Letting them never be forgotten. Continuing to march forward.

I commend the whole cast on an outstanding performance. I honestly feel that this movies should receive "Best Picture", "Best Actor: Forrest Whitaker", "Best Screenplay", and "Best Director". If stories like this aren't told. .our history will continue to be lost. In regards to The Butler. .to Lee Daniels I say "Thank You"~*

School Daze Sequel?! YES!!

*Check out the full interview done by Black&Sexy TV above (10 minute mark)*

Now after learning that the "Fly Girl" trilogy by Omar Tyree would be turned into a movie. .
The legendary Spike Lee confirms that he already has the script for the sequel to his beloved classic "School Daze"!!

Spike Lee said the sequel would take place 25 years later and he hopes to get actor Laurence Fishburne to play his role as “Dap.” Lee said, “I had the script for [the sequel] to School Daze, a contemporary version, same school, 25 years later. Hopefully I can get Laurence Fishburne to play Dap. He’ll be the president now of the school. It would deal with issues in HSBCUs today, some of the same stuff from the last film, like the pledging process. But also lots of new stuff like homophobia,it’s a big subject in it. Class issues, color, hair texture, but it’s stuff happening today.”

I don't know about you but a few people I would like to see on the campus of "Mission College" would be MYSELF ;") Nicole Baharie, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Lance Gross, Pooch Hall, Taylour Paige, Jason Newsome, Taraji P. Henson, Terrence J, and of course the return of Tisha Campbell-Martin, Laurence Fishburne, Samuel L. Jackson, and Giancarlo Esposito (Dean Big Brother ALL MighTY!!)

Ha!! The new school G Phi G and Gamma Rays are probably going to be NO joke especially from the way things go down now on a lot of campuses across the country (not just HBCU's).

It will be refreshing and open up a new wave of fans for Spike Lee!!

Here is one of MY FAVorite scenes!! The Talent Show!!
They weren't playing around with that "Black & Silver"!!  LoL!!

Mr. Lee hit me UP!!

In case you had not heard. .VH1 will be bringing the story of the Multi-Platinum. .Best Selling Female group of all time to a television screen near you this FALL. That's right the story of TLC!!
I can admit I was a little shocked by the young women who were casted (no hatred at all) but after viewing this trailer. .they truly did each character justice!! They look almost identical to the ladies. I'm really excited to see Lil Mama bring to life the late and great Left-Eye!!

Don't know about you but I was a HUGE TLC fan!! What girl wasn't?! Child I wanted hair like Chilli's, rocked the Crossed Colors fits, wore the band~aid on my face, and everything!! LoL!!

I will be ready to #TuneIN and you should too!!
